The 17th Conference of the Parties, hence the name “COP17”, has taken place from 28 November to 9 December 2011 in Durban, during which approximately 20,000 visitors from 192 nations have attended the conference, with the purpose to discuss and develop ways to facilitate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as assessing the progress in dealing with climate change. eThekwini Municipality has recognized for a long time that energy consumption from street lights represent an important factor in their energy bill. In order to demonstrate eThekwini’s commitment towards energy-efficient luminaire technologies, they awarded a tender for the supply and delivery of LED luminaires to BEKA, Africa’s leading luminaire manufacturer. BEKA’s latest innovation, the BEKA LEDlume, has been identified as the luminaire of choice. A total of 1,230 BEKA LEDlume 48/61W LED luminaires have been replacing existing 80W Mercury Vapour luminaires, resulting in an energy saving of 38kW. The BEKA LEDlume has been designed to operate LED light sources of up to 90W in an ambient temperature environment of at least 35°C, without reducing the LED lifetime of 12 to 15 years. The slim, aesthetical design of the luminaire, optimised for LED characteristics, together with the unsurpassed light uniformity are some of the features that make this luminaire unique. The three-compartment housing ensures reliable ingress protection of IP66. It is also designed for easy technology upgrades since BEKA’s FutureProof concept ensures upward compatibility to newer technologies. This is achieved by designing the luminaire in such a manner to allow on-site replacement of the LED engine and its power supply and electronic drivers. eThekwini operates most of its streetlights off a common power supply. For this reason, BEKA has applied a unique technology, which uses state-of-the art electronic components, integrated with the LED PCB’s to recognise the ambient light level and switch the luminaire on and off accordingly. BEKA is proud that its products have been chosen to demonstrate to the delegates and subsequently to the rate payers, that LED street lights provide the environmental and financial benefits to the public.
