BEKA SchrÃ©der is proud to have successfully supplied a solar street lighting system consisting of over 1050 units in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), lighting up the prestigious main road from the airport right through the city. Our local agent, Mr Martin MÃ¼llner, with whom we keep on developing tailor made solar solutions for the DRC, performed the professional installation of the system.
Like many African countries, the DRC is faced with power generation challenges. This, coupled with ageing infrastructure, makes the availability of electricity unreliable and poses a significant challenge for ensuring reliable lighting on its roads. Thus the decision to choose a solar lighting solution was made.
This 8 lane major link road has been lit to an international standard of Class A3 as requested and according to envisaged traffic volume.
The BEKA LEDlume-midi 36LED/85W luminaire, mounted at 8 meter above road level, was chosen for this project. The BEKA SOLAR Solution features built-in intelligence which provides additional energy savings by automatically dimming the luminaire to a pre-selected dimming profile. The design includes dual charging capabilities which allows for grid connection to charge the batteries should the solar charging ability be impeded for more than the two-day designed redundancy period. The MPPT charge controller allows for maximum charging ability, even when weather conditions are not optimal. It is additionally equipped with a data logging function, which can store up to two yearsâ€™ worth of data, ideal for troubleshooting. A staggered spacing of 25m was applied and, owing to the highly efficient BEKA LEDlume luminaire which features excellent light distribution, uniformity and efficacy, compliance with all road parameters were achieved.
Furthermore, the BEKA SOLAR module has been engineered for all geographical locations in Africa, and has been designed to operate reliably at a high light output over a 12 to 14 hour period. It has sufficient autonomy to cater for up to two continuous overcast or rainy days, in order to continue its reliable night operation.
The BEKA LEDlume-midi is the LED luminaire of choice since it is designed and manufactured in South Africa, thus taking Africaâ€™s environments and conditions into account. This is evident in the luminaireâ€™s design. A unique thermal sensor technique monitors the temperature of the LEDs on the printed circuit boards (PCBs). Once a critical temperature is reached, which could harm the lifetime of the LEDs, the current is reduced to ensure safe operating temperatures of the LEDs. This safeguards the LEDs and ensures that the long lifetime of up to 100,000 hours (L70), is achieved. The slim, aesthetical design is optimised for LED characteristics.
One of the key focus points of this project was to impart knowledge and technical training to local agents. This enables the technically-qualified personnel to better maintain the systems, ultimately extending the lifespan of the product. BEKA SchrÃ©der is also providing ongoing remote assistance and technical support to ensure that the skills transfer and local upliftment continues.
